Dear allies,
According to the New York Power Authority, the agency’s low-cost Niagara River hydropower program “is designed to promote economic development, job creation, and capital investment within New York State.” This finite renewable power source is not intended to subsidize energy intensive data centers to profit off of our precious and finite natural resources while also harming our quality of life and environmental well-being!
Take action today. We have an opportunity to uplift the Tonawanda Seneca Nation’s recent demands to NYPA regarding the allocation of low-cost Niagara River hydropower to tenants at the WNY STAMP mega-industrial site. NYPA recently held a hearing on the proposed form of Contracts for the sale of Hydropower to 2025 Host Communities, Tuscarora Nation and Niagara University. While the hearing does not explicitly pertain to the Low-Cost WNY Hydropower Program, given the finite supply of Hydropower produced at the Niagara Power Project, these important allocations are in fact inextricably connected and should not be considered separately.
We know that access to subsidized hydropower is the only advantage of the STAMP site for prospective tenants. This precious sustainable energy should never be allocated to industrial tenants at STAMP - and especially not to a proposed data center facing litigation because of inadequate environmental review.
Important Update on HDD and Threats to TSN Drinking Water + TAKE ACTION AGAIN!
While we’re emailing you, we wanted to share an update on another recent action alert. At the end of June and beginning of July, we reached out to you twice with an urgent ask to help protect Tonawanda Seneca Nation drinking water from contamination from GCEDC’s ill-advised plans to drill under Nation waterways using horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
Well, after more than 1,250 of you emailed GCEDC, NYSDEC and USACE - and many of you also called USACE - GCEDC now claims they are not using HDD but are instead “trench cutting” under the culvert in question. However, they won’t say how this process differs from HDD or what drilling substances they plan to use. Meanwhile, observers have documented evidence of road subsidence along the roadside where GCEDC has already begun construction. Click here to send a followup email to NYSDEC and USACE demanding that GCEDC fully explain their plans and provide a list and safety information on all of the substances that they plan to use.
